حكاية تمثال فينوس بنغازي المعروض في متحف بنسلفانيا

بعد ان تمكنت الجماهيرية الليبية من استعادة تمثال فينوس لبدة عام 1999 ثم فينوس قوريني عام 2008 من ايطاليا بفضل دور قائد الثورة وتأثيره السياسي و مطالبته المستمرة بإعادة الممتلكات الثقافية الى موطنها الاصلي ، جاء الان دور المطالبة بارجاع تمثال فينوس بنغازي المعروض في المتحف الاثري الانثربولوجي بجامعة بنسلفانيا بالولايات المتحدة الامريكية منذ شهر مايو عام 1969 ، وهذه المقالة تعرض حكاية هذا التمثال و تبين اهميته و تجدد اثارة قضية الاثار الليبية المنهوبة والمطالبة باعادتها الى ليبيا.
وقد بدأت حكاية هذا التمثال عام 1902 في مدينة بنغازي التي كانت آنذاك متصرفية تركية يحكمها طاهر باشا ، هذه المدينة التي احتضنت انقاض مدينة يوسبريدس الاغريقية (مقبرة سيدي عبيد) منذ القرن السادس ق.م. ثم اعقبتها مدينة بيرينيكي منذ عام 246 ق.م. في موقع جديد تشغل جزء منه حاليا مقبرة سيدي خريبيش ، وقد عثر على هذا التمثال احد الليبيين ـ لم يحفظ لنا التاريخ اسمه ـ بين انقاض مبنى في منطقة ذكرت باسم عين السلماني في احدى الوثائق ، وقد سارع ذلك الشخص ببيع التمثال على عادة سكان المدينة عندما يعثرون على اشياء قديمة يسارعون لبيعها الى التجار المالطيين واليهود الذين كانوا يتاجرون بمثل هذه المقتنيات حيث ينقلونها الى اوروبة او يبيعونها للاجانب المقيمين بالمدينة ، كما كان بعض الليبيين يعرضون ما يعثرون عليه على الاجانب سواء المقيمين ام الزائرين للمدينة للاستفادة المادية من وراء بيعهم لتلك الاشياء التي اصبح ثمنها مرتفعا آتذاك ، ويشهد على ذلك ما ذكره الرحالة الفرنسي ماتيزوليكس الذي زار بنغازي عام 1906، ويبدو هذا ما حدث فعلا مع هذا التمثال حيث يبدو ان من عثر عليه قد باعه الى طبيب ايطالي كان يعمل بالمدينة يدعى جان بيرود (J.Perrod) الذي بدوره نقله الى مدينة تورين الايطالية (تورينو) عام 1906 وعرضه للبيع هناك حيث اشتراه الرسام الايطالي كارلو كيسا (C.Chessa) الذي بدوره نقله الى باريس عام 1907 حيث اعاره الى متحف اللوفر ليعرض به عدة سنوات قبل ان يعود به الى ايطاليا عام 1914 حيث عرضه للبيع في روما على مصلحة الاثار الايطالية لكن الاخيرة لم تشتره ربما لانها اصبحت في حوزتها تمثال فينوس قوريني الذي عثر عليه في مدينة شحات الاثرية في اواخر ديسمبر عام 1913 ونقله المستعمرون الطليان الى روما ليعرض في متحفها الوطني آنذاك (اعيد هذا التمثال الى ليبيا في نهاية شهر اغسطس 2008)، و لايعرف مصير تمثال فينوس بنغازي ما بين 1915 – 1930 ، لكنه ربما وصل باحدى الطرق الى نيويورك عام 1930 وبقى بها الى ان اشتراه السيد ارثر ايدوين باي من بانسلفانيا (A.E.Bye) الذي باعه الى سيدة امريكية تدعى مسز توماس غريست (Greist ) التي اشترته في 27 /6/1935 بمبلغ 15 الف دولار ، وقد ظل في ملكيتها حتى وفاتها ، وقد انتقلت ملكية التمثال الى ابنتها وزوج الاخيرة السيد بيومونت دبليو رايت (Beaumont W. Wright) ، وقد اهدت الابنة التمثال الى متحف جامعة بانسلفانيا في شهر مايو من عام 1969 ، في ذكرى والدها السيد توماس هاينز غريست ووالدتها السيدة ماري كوبير جونسون غريست ، وفي المتحف منح الرقم (L-262-1) وما زال معروضا في ذلك المتحف حتى الان ، وهو يحمل حاليا ًرقم التسجيل (69-14-1) ، وقد حمل التمثال رقم 29 في كتالوج النحت الكلاسيكي لمتحف بنسلفانيا الصادر عام 2006 ص ص.44-47 .
ومنذ وصول التمثال الى تورينو ثم باريس في بداية القرن العشرين لفت الانتباه ووتناولته اقلام الباحثين بالدراسة حيث كانت اول دراسة منشورة عنه هي دراسة ج. بيرو (G.Perrot) المنشورة عام 1906 ، وهي التي نسب فيها الاخير التمثال الى طراز افروديت انادومين ، وقد توالت الدراسات عن التمثال خلال القرن العشرين وجميعها اكدت نسبة التمثال لذلك الطراز لعل اهمها رسالة الماجستير التي قدمتها نانسي وينتر عنه عام 1970 ، كما ان الدراسة المنشورة في كتالوج المتحف مهمة و لخصت جل الدراسات السابقة التي تناولت تمثال فينوس بنغازي واعتمد عليها هنا في وصف التمثال ، يليها دراسة دونالد وايت للتمثال المنشورة عام 2007 التي ركزت على نقاط جديرة بالتنويه و العرض.
هذا عن حكاية تمثال فينوس بنغازي منذ العثور عليه عام 1902 في مدينة بنغازي الى وصوله الى متحف بنسلفانيا عام 1969 و الدراسات التي اجريت عليه ، اما عن وصف التمثال فهو تمثال صغير لا يتجاوز الجزء الباقي منه 32 سم وبعرض 13.5 سم ، و قد نحت من رخام متكون من حبيبات كبيرة مصدره جزيرة باروس الاغريقية وقد تأكد هذا من خلال التحليل الاشعاعي النظائري لرخام التمثال الذي عمله البرفسور نورمان هيرتز عام 1996 من جامعة جورجيا ، وهذا يؤكد اصالة هذا التمثال.
و التمثال في حالة جيدة باستثناء بعض التشوهات على الشعر و الاصابع و غيرها نتج بعضها عن تنظيف التمثال بعد العثور عليه بمواد غير مناسبة ، و التمثال غير كامل ويصور فتاة عارية من رأسها الى الجزء العلوي من فخديها ، حيث ظهر الجزء السفلي من التمثال بمثابة القاعدة التي يقف عليها ، ومن ناحية اخرى فان القدمين وارجل التمثال الى اعلى الفخدين ضائعة ويفتقدها الجزء المتبقي منه . وتظهر الفتاة (المؤلهة) رافعة يديها مع ميول رأسها قليلا نحو اليسار مع تنكيسه الى اسفل ، كما ان جسمها يميل نحو اليسار ، و يبدو ان التمثال كان يستند او يرتكز على القدم اليسرى ، و تمسك بكل يد من يديها نهاية الشريط الذي يعصب شعرها و الذي يبرز كأنه جزء من شعرها المجعد ، و تصفيفة الشعر بسيطة فهو مقسوم الى جزأين من منتصف الرأس ومربوط بحزام مع تجمعه خلف الرأس وتظهر منها عدة خصلات مضفورة متفاوتة الطول توجد خلف الرقبة وعلى جانبيها ، ويلاحظ ان اذني التمثال مثقوبان مما يوحي انه كانت تتزين باقراط وربما كانت اقراطا ذهبية ، اما عن الوجه و ملامحه فهو صغير وضيق ذو جبهة منخفضة ، وحدود تجويف العينين خشن ، اما الانف فهو طويل مذبب الشكل و الفم صغير و قد نفذ بشكل رائع ، و الذقن مستدير الشكل ، اما الرقبة فهي اسطوانية مكتنزة تظهر بها ثنية لحمية ، والبدن متطاول ، والصدر كبير و متوازن والبطن كبيرة ومكتنزة قليلا يتوسطها منطقة منخفضة للسرة ، ويلاحظ على اصابعها انها طويلة وقد نحتت الاضافر بعناية ، اما التمثال من الخلف فهو انموذجي في شكله ويظهر به تجويف رأسي بطول العمود الفقري اسفله توجد ما يشبه الحفرة ليست من عمل النحات و لكن يبدو انها عملت حديثا . اما الجزء السفلي من التمثال فمن الصعب وصفه بسبب ضياعه ، الا انه يمكن القول انه ربما يكون عارٍ ايضا يتناسب مع عري بقية التمثال وهذا الاكثر احتمالا و لاسيما عند مقارنته بتماثيل افروديت انادومين ، كما ان الارجل والفخدين قد تكون مغطاة بعباءة اسوة ببعض تماثيل المؤلهة افروديت / فينوس.
ومن خلال الشكل العام للتمثال فهو احد التماثيل المشهورة المنسوبة الى المؤلهة افروديت التي عبدها الاغريق بهذا الاسم و نقلوها في الاصل عن حضارات الشرق (عشتارت - عشتروت) ، وتمثل عندهم مؤلهة الحب و الجمال الانثوي ، وقد عرفها الرومان باسم فينوس ، وقد جسدت هذه المؤلهة باشكال متنوعة سواء في النحت ام في فنون اخرى ، كما انها كانت تجسد مدثرة بلباسها ولكن في غالب الاحيان كانت تصور عارية او نصف عارية و باوضاع مختلفة وفقا للصفات التي عرفت بها و الاساطير التي حيكت حولها ، ولعل من اشهر تماثيل افروديت / فينوس ذلك التمثال العاري الذي نحته النحات الاغريقي الشهير براكستليز ما بين 364-361 ق.م. في جزيرة كنيدوس وكان قبلة للزوار وفقا لما يذكره المؤرخ بليني في كتابه التاريخ الطبيعي ، اضافة الى التماثيل التي تنسب الى هذه المؤلهة و تصورها وهي خارجة من الاستحمام او البحر او صاعدة من البحر ، وهذا ما اصطلح على تسميته باسم انادومين (Anadyomene) ، وهي تقف عارية رافعه يديها لتربط شعرها مع ميول جذعها نحو اليمين او اليسار قليلا ، وقد وصفت هذه الوضعية اي انادومين في الكثير من الابجرامات الشعرية ، كما ان اقدم تجسيد لها ظهر في رسم جداري رسمه الفنان ابلليس (Apelles) (352-308 ق.م.) في اسكلبيوم مدينة كوس الاغريقية وفقا لما يذكره المؤرخ بليني الاكبر (كتاب 35 فقرة 91)، وقد ضاعت تلك اللوحة بعد ان نقلت الى مدينة روما في العصر الامبراطوري ، كما قلدت في رسم جداري بمدينة بومبي يجسد ميلاد افروديت ، وفي نهاية العصر الهلينِستي و العصر الروماني جسد هذا الموضوع في النحت والعملة وفي فنون اخرى ، وتمثال فينوس بنغازي من اوائل التماثيل الرخامية التي نسبت الى هذا الطراز ، ويمكن مقارنته من حيث الوضعية او الشكل العام بتمثال برونزي صغير لذات المؤلهة من الاسكندرية يعرض في المتحف البريطاني، وتماثيل اخرى من مصر في متحف اللوفر و متحف كوبنهاجن اضافة الى تميثيلات من الطين المشوي لافروديت انادومين تعرض في متحف اللوفر مصدرها كيرينايكي (قورينائية) تؤرخ بالقرن الثاني ق.م.، و يبدو ان تمثال فينوس بنغازي قد نحت بتأثير مدرسة الاسكندرية للنحت في العصر الهلنيستي وهذا ما اكدته ملامح التمثال و اسلوب نحته ، ومن ثم فان التمثال يؤرخ بواخر العصر الهلنيستي ما بين القرنين الثاني و الاول ق.م.
و هناك عدة نقاط جديرة بالمناقشة يطرحها هذا التمثال ، ركزت هنا في محورين يتعلق الاول بشكل التمثال و الثاني بمكان العثور عليه و ما يعكسه من معلومات ، ويمكن تفصيل المحورين على النحو الاتي :
اولاً : الشكل الذي ظهر به التمثال ـ اي بدون الجزء السفلي ـ يعد غريبا ، وكان هذا مثارا للجدل و المناقشة بين الباحثين لايجاد تفسير لهذه الوضعية او الشكل ، ويقال في هذا الصدد هل التمثال نحت في الاصل بهذا الشكل ، ام ان التمثال نحت بشكل متكامل ثم تعرض للقص بمنشار بعد العثور عليه ليسهل نقله خارج ليبيا ؟ الا ان التدقيق في الجزء السفلي من التمثال وفحص اجزاء منه بضوء فوق البنسفجي عام 1957 اظهر انه لا يوجد اي دليل للقص او آثار اي منشار ، مما جعل بعض الباحثين يرجح ان التمثال كان جزء من نافورة او وضع على حافتها او داخلها ليصور كأن المؤلهة خارجة من الماء او البحر وهي ذات الفكرة التي يرمز لها التمثال اي انادومين ، الا انه بسبب خلو التمثال من اي آثار تظهر تعرضه للمياه لفترة طويلة ، اضافة الى ان هذه الطريقة عرفت في العصر الروماني و التمثال يرجع الى اواخر العصر الهلنيستي ، مما جعل بعض الدارسين لا يؤيد هذا التفسير، ولكن ربما نحت التمثال لهذا الغرض لكنه لم يوضع داخل اي نافورة او بركة مياه. ومن ناحية اخرى فان هذا الشكل الغريب ربما لم يصنع هكذا انما الجزء السفلي كان ملتصق بالتمثال بتقنية بسيطة مكنت بعد العثور عليه او قديما من انفصال جزئي التمثال عن بعضهما بحيث بقى الجزء العلوي و ضاع الجزء السفلي عن قصد او بدون قصد.
ثانياً: واذا كان التمثال ينسب الى المؤلهة افروديت فهو من المؤكد له علاقة بالمكان الذي وجد به وبشكل اوسع بالمدينة و الاقليم ، ومن هذه الناحية من الضروري التأكيد على ان عبادة افروديت كانت منتشرة بالاقليم منذ القرن السادس ق.م. حيث ان هيرودوتوس في كتابه الثاني (فقرة 181) يشير الى وجود معبد في مدينة قوريني او في ضواحيها لافروديت حيث اهدت له لاديكي القورينية زوجة فرعون مصر اماسيس (570-526 ق.م.) تمثالا يمثل هذا المؤلهة ، كما عثر على الكثير من تماثيل افروديت في مدينة شحات الاثرية (قوريني) التي تعكس وجود معابد لهذه الربة و لاسيما في العصرين الهلنيستي و الروماني، ولعل اشهر تلك التماثيل التمثال المعروف باسم فينوس قوريني ، وهناك عدة تماثيل اخرى منها توجد في المتحف البريطاني ، كما شجع البطالمة على عبادة هذه المؤلهة وتشييد المعابد لها في مصر و الولايات التابعة لهم و منها اقليم كيرينايكي (قورينائية)، كما انهم قرنوها بعبادة بعض ملكاتهم مثل ارسنوي و بيرينيكي ، اما ما يخص مدينة بنغازي (يوسبريديس ـ بيرينيكي) فقد عثر على تماثيل لهذه المعبودة في حفريات سيدي عبيد (يوسبريدس) و حفريات سيدي خريبيش (بيرينيكي) مما يؤكد انتشار عبادتها في العصرين الاغريقي و الروماني ، يضاف الى هذا ان الجغرافي سترابون في كتابه السابع عشر (3 ، 20) يشير الى وجود معبد لافروديت في جزيرة في بحيرة تريتونيس التي بنيت قربها مدينة بيرينيكي ، هذه البحيرة التي ممكن توافق سبخة السلماني الواقعة قرب سيدي عبيد حيث توجد اطلال مدينة يوسبريدس القديمة ، التي كان يشار الى بقاياها باسم آثار السلماني ، وهذا تأكد من خلال خارطة مبدئية (sketch) اعدت لمدينة بنغازي عام 1888 بواسطة دي كاميرون (محفوظة الان في ارشيف المتحف البريطاني)، ويرجح ان موقع العثور على التمثال الذي اشير اليه باسم السلماني او عين السلماني ما هو الا بقايا قريبة من يوسبريديس وقريبة من معبد افروديت الذي كان موجودا في جزيرة وسط بحيرة وفقا لما يذكره سترابون ، و ليس بالضرورة انه وجد في ذلك المعبد لان اماكن وضع التماثيل الدينية كانت تتعدى المعابد فقد وجدت في بقايا المباني العامة والخاصة ، و لربما عثر على تمثال فينوس بنغازي في بقايا احد منازل الاغنياء التي يفترض وجودها داخل المدينة و خارجها، وعموما هذا التمثال يعد دليلاً آخر على عبادة افروديت / فينوس في مدينة بنغازي القديمة خلال اواخر العصر الهلنيستي ( القرن الثاني و القرن الاول ق.م.) و هي الفترة التي يؤرخ بها هذا التمثال.
ومما تقدم يلاحظ اهمية هذا التمثال ، كما ان عرض حكايته هنا ليس من باب التوثيق العلمي و التاريخي لهذا الاثر فحسب و لكن هي دعوة لاستعادة هذا التمثال من متحف بنسلفانيا واعادته الى مدينة بنغازي التي نهب منها الكثير من الاثار التي تعرض في الكثير من المتاحف العالمية ، كما انها دعوة للاسراع في انشاء متحف بهذه المدينة التي تفتقد الى هذا النوع من المعالم الثقافية والحضارية.

السراي الحمراء بطرابلس

لعل ابرز ما يميز مدينة طرابلس القديمة قلعتها المطلة على البحر في جنوب شرقي المدينة ، و المجاورة حاليا للساحة الخضراء ، هذه القلعة التي يجاوز عمرها اكثر من 500 عام ظلت تقاوم الزمن لتروي فصول مهمة من التاريخ الحديث و المعاصر لمدينة طرابلس ، وقد اشتهرت القلعة بانها كانت مقرا للحكام الاتراك وانها بنيت باحجار حمراء اللون او ان جدرانها كانت تطلى باللون الاحمر ومن ثم فقد استحقت تسميتها السراي الحمراء .
ومدينة طرابلس التي كانت تعرف باسم اويا او اويات اسست بواسطة الفينقيين في القرن الخامس ق.م. ثم تمكن الرومان من الاستيلاء عليها في نهاية القرن الاول ق.م.اعقبهم البيزنطيين في القرن الرابع الميلادي ثم الوندال عام 455م ثم اعاد البيزنطيين الاستيلاء عليها في 534 م واخيرا فتحها العرب المسلمون عام 643م وظلت عربية اسلامية الى عصرنا الحاضر ، وعلى الرغم من الشعوب القديمة التي تتابعت على استيطانها الا ان المعالم الاثرية التي ترجع اليهم تعد قليلة بسبب تواصل الاستيطان بها الى الوقت الحاضر ، ومن ناحية اخرى يرجح ان المكان الذي بنيت عليه قلعة طرابلس (السراي) كان مشغولا باحد المباني الرومانية (ربما حمامات عامة) ، كما يبدو ان البيزنطيين بعد ان طردوا الوندال من طرابلس عام 534 م اقاموا قلعة او حصن لحماية المدينة ، الذي كان يمثل جزء من تحصيناتها ، وهي ذات التحصينات التي وجدها المسلمون واضافوا اليها ، و استمرت مستعملة في العصور الاسلامية المختلفة حيث كانت مركزاً لحكام طرابلس من اغالبة وموحدين و حفصيين والاخيرين اهتموا بتحصينات طرابلس و تدعيمها قد يكون من بينها القلعة على الرغم من ان الرحالة التيجاني الذي زارها ما بين 1307-1308 م يشير الى تردي حالتها ، ويبدو ان هذا كان دافعا للاسبان الذين احتلوا طرابلس في 25 /7/ 1510 بقيادة الكونت بيترو دي نافارو لاعادة بنائها لتكون حصناً يحميهم من الطرابلسيين و التواجير الذين قاوموا ذلك الاحتلال ، ويرجع الشكل الحالي العام للقلعة او السراي الى الاعمال التي قام بها الاسبان حيث بنوا او جددوا الحصن او البرج الجنوبي الذي اسموه حصن القديس جورج الذي يقابل حاليا شارع امحمد المقريف والذي يشبه في شكله مقدمة السفينة ، كما بنوا الحصن الغربي الذي اسموه حصن القديس يعقوب و الذي يقع حاليا قرب برج الساعة ، وهذين الحصنين او البرجين يواجهان المدينة حيث يسكن الاهالي المقاومين لهم ، وهناك جدار ضخم يمتد بين الحصنين و يشكل الجانب الجنوبي الغربي للقلعة و يمتد هذا الجانب مسافة 130 مترا ، و يتوسطه المدخل الرئيسي للقلعة ، وهناك جدار اخر يشكل الجانب الجنوبي الشرقي يمتد مسافة 140 مترا و الذي ينتهي ببرج اطلق عليه فرسان مالطا الذين بنوه اسم القديس جاكمو ، ويجاور هذا الجدار ساحة اطلق عليها الاسبان ساحة القديسة باربرة التي يطل عليها مسكن الوالي و مخزن الذخيرة ، كما يوجد جدارا على الجانب الشمالي الشرقي يمتد لمسافة 115 مترا ، اضافة الى الجدار الشمالي الغربي الممتد مسافة 90 مترا الذي يتوسطه من الداخل كنيسة بناها فرسان مالطا عرفت باسم كنيسة ليوناردو ، وبهذا فان السراي تتكون من اربعة اضلاع وتشغل مساحة 13 الف متر مربع تقريبا ، استقرت بها الحامية الاسبانية المعتدية الذين شيدوا اغلب مبانيها من حجارة سور مدينة طرابلس و بعض مباني طرابلس الاخرى، وعندما زار الحسن الوزان (ليو الافريقي ) طرابلس و صف السراي بانها ذات اسوار ضخمة ومزودة بمدفعية ، وعلى الرغم من هذا فان السراي او القلعة ذكرت في تقرير في شهر اكتوبر عام 1524 بانها تحتاج الى صيانة وترميم اسوارها وانها لن تصمد امام المدفعية القوية .
وقد سلم الاسبان طرابلس الى ما يعرف باسم فرسان مالطا منذ عام 1530 الذين استقروا بها حتى عام 1551 ، وقد اتخذ هولاء السراي حصنا لهم و لذا فقد اهتموا بها حيث قاموا ببعض الاصلاحات واضافوا بعض الاضافات التي تعزز مقاومتها لخطر اهالي طرابلس من البر ، و الاسطول العثماني ـ الذي يجوب البحر المتوسط ـ بحرا ، و الذي افلح في 14 /8/1551 من طرد فرسان مالطا واعادة هذه السراي الى وجهها الاسلامي بعد ان حاول الاسبان و فرسان مالطا ان يجعلوها مسيحية ، فقد حولت الكنيسة الى مسجد في عهد مراد آغا عرف باسم مسجد القلعة او مسجد الجند ، ولقد اهتم العثمانيون بهذه السراي و ادخلوا عليها الكثير من الاصلاحات واستقر بها الحكام الاتراك والحامية التركية خلال العهد العثماني الاول 1551-1711 ، وكانت تحوي الكثير من المنشأت و المباني لاقامة الولاة الاتراك و حاشيتهم و جنودهم الذي يعززون سيطرة الدولة العثمانية على هذا الجزء من الشمال الافريقي ، وينطلقون منها لجمع الضرائب من الاهالي الذين برزحون تحت سيطرة الاتراك اخوانهم في الدين . وقد كانت السراي محصنة بطريقة جيدة اضافة الى اسوارها وابراجها التي كانت تعلوها عشرات المدافع زد على ذلك خندق مائي يحيط بها من ثلاث جهات اضافة الى البحر من الناحية الشرقية .
وخلال سيطرة القرمانليين على سدة الحكم في طرابلس ما بين 1711-1835 استقر بالسراي باشاواتهم الذين كان من اشهرهم احمد باشا وعلي باشا و يوسف باشا و قد شهدت السراي عدة اضافات في عهدهم حيث اصبح للباشا منزل خاص به و لاسرته ، وهناك ما يعرف باسم الردهة القرمانلية المتكونة من طابقين و يطل عليها سكن الباشا ومرافق اخرى ، وقد شهدت السراي في هذا العهد احداث جسام منها الصراع الامريكي الليبي الذي نتج عنها اسر البارجة الحربية فيلادلفيا و طاقمها في عهد يوسف باشا و تحديدا في اكتوبر عام 1803، كما ان ما قام به الاسطول الليبي من اسر للسفن الاوربية ادى الى مهاجمة الفرنسيين و الانجليز على هذه السراي ودكت جدرانها و مبانيها في الكثير من المرات ، وقد شهدت حجرات السراي و اروقتها المؤمرات التي حاكها الباشاوات القرمانليين وابنائهم من اجل كرسي الباشوية و لاسيما يوسف باشا الذي قتل اخيه حسن بك في السراي يوم 20 /7/1790م ،كما صدرت من هذه الكثير من الاوامر للفتك بالخارجين عن سلطة القرمانليين من ليبيين وغيرهم في اماكن شتى من ليبيا و لاسيما الانشقاقات التي يقوم بها افراد الاسرة القرمانليين و غيرهم في بنغازي و درنة و فزان مثل ثورة ابوقيلة ، و ثورة احمد ناصر حاكم فزان والاخير بعد ان قبض عليه باعه احمد باشا في حفلة غريبة في السراي لابنه محمد بفلسين ثم اعاده الى منصبه ، هذه الانتصارات التي يتبعها اطلاق مدفعية السراي 24 طلقة ابتهاجا بتلك الانتصارات ، كما شهدت السراي المذابح و الاغتيالات التي يقوم بها الباشاوات لبعض شيوخ القبائل بعد ان يستدرجونهم للسراي من اجل منحهم البرنوص عنوانا على رضا الباشا عليهم ، هذا البرنوص الذي كان يسعى اليه الكثيرين ، منهم من يتحصل عليه و يخرج سالما من السراي و منهم من يتحصل عليه ويصبح البرنوص كفنه بعد ان يطاح برأسه ، وقد شهدت السراي تدخلات القناصل الاجانب لاسيما الفرنسيين و الانجليز الذين كثيرا ما تدخلوا في شؤون الحكم و املوا شروطهم تساندهم سفنهم الحربية الرابضة قريبا من طرابلس مهددين الباشا بانزال علم بلادهم من سارية القنصلية وهذا اعلانا للحرب على الباشا ، ومن ثم ايقاف المعاهدات التي يجني منها الباشا الاموال الطائلة ، وهذا ما كان يهمهم ، يذكر من هولاء القناصل القنصل الانجليزي وارنجتون (1814-1846) و القنصل الفرنسي روسو. ومن ناحية اخرى رافق القناصل الرحالة الاجانب لتقديمهم للباشا و حصولهم على الفرمانات و رسائل التوصية التي تؤكد دعم الباشا و حمايته لهم في تجوالهم في ليبيا يذكر منهم وليام سميث (1816) و الاخوان بيتشي (1821 ) ، و ريتشي و ليون (1818-1819) وهناك اودني و كلابرتون ونهام (1824) اضافة الى الكسندر لاينج صهر وارنجتون الذي قتل اثناء عودته من تمبكتو كما زار السراي الرحالة الاسباني باديا لبلك المشهور باسم علي بك العباسي (1805-1806) ، كما ان الانجليزية المس تولي التي مكثت عشر سنوات بطربلس (1783-1793) ترددت على السراي و لاسيما مكان الحريم و سجلت بقلمها الكثير من الحوادث والعادات التي كانت شاهدة عيان عليها .
و لم يتغير حال السراي في العهد العثماني الثاني 1835-1912 ، فقد ظلت مكان للولاة الاتراك الذين ترسلهم الاستانة ، كما ظلت مكان يرهبه اهالي طرابلس خوفا من المصير الذي سيلاقوه اذا ما القوا في سجونها و دهاليزها عندما يخالفون اولئك الحكام و لا يذعنون لمطالبهم ، وقد شهدت هذه المرحلة تزايد الثورات المحلية من الزعماء الليبين للخروج عن سلطة الاتراك لعل اشهرها ثورة عبدالجليل في الجنوب و المنطقة الوسطى الذي قتل عام 1842 وجز رأسه وحمل الى السراي ، وهو ذات المصير الذي لاقه رأس الثائر الجبلي غومة المحمودي عام 1858م الذي احتفل بالانتصار عليه و من معه من قبائل الجبل الغربي في السراي الحمراء ، كما شهدت السراي بعض الولاة الذين اهتموا بشؤون الولاية وقاموا ببعض الانجازات المهمة اغلبها ذات طابع عسكري و منها ذو طابع مدني مثل الاعمال التي اقامها المشير علي رضا باشا (1867-1870 ، 1872-1874)، ومن اعماله ترميم مسجد القلعة او السراي .
وعندما احتل الايطاليون طرابلس اصبحت السراي مقرا عسكريا ومقرا للحاكم الايطالي الذي يدير البلاد عسكريا و اداريا و تشهد حجراتها واروقتها عما فعله اولئك الحكام من جرائم في حق الليبيين من خلال الاوامر التي كانوا يصدرونها من تلك السراي امثال بادليو و بالبو، وقد احدث الايطاليون الكثير من الاصلاحات داخلها و شيدوا بها عدة مبانٍ لعل اهمها ما بنوه داخل حصن القديس جورج الذي استغل جزءا منه متحفا عام 1930 الذي اسسه رئيس الآثار جياكومو قويدي و يتكون من 14 قاعة ، وللأسف فقد اتخذ الحاكم الإيطالي بالبو هذا المتحف مقرا لإدارته في عام 1935 و بقت المعروضات في مكانها الى عام 1937 وقد شهدت هذه السراي ما قام به بعض الجنود الايطاليين الذين يملئهم الحقد عند احتلال السراي بالعبث بالوثائق العثمانية التي رمي جزء كبير منها في البحر وعبث بها باشكال متعددة ، ولكي يغطي الايطاليون عما فعله بعضهم اسسوا دار المحفوظات التاريخية التي جمعت فيها الكثير من الوثائق التاريخية التي تهم تاريخ ليبيا و التي ظلت في مكانها تحت اشرافهم ثم تحت اشراف مصلحة الاثار التي صنفتها اخيرا بوسائل تقنية حديثة وذلك قبل ان تنقل الوثائق الى مركز جهاد الليبيين .
كما استغلت السراي الحمراء مقرا لإدارة الخدمات الأثرية في ليبيا التابعة لوزارة المستعمرات منذ عام 1913 وكان أول رئيس لها لوتشيو مارياني (Mariani) و جياكومو بوني (Boni) ، و قد نظمت هذه الإدارة بحيث يكون لها مكتب في طرابلس يشرف على آثار المنطقة الغربية ترأسه سلفاتوري أوريجيما(Aurigemma) ( 1913-1919) ثم بيترو رومانللي (Romanelli)(1920-1923) ثم بارتوتشيني (1923-1928) ثم جياكومو قويدي (1928-1936) ثم جياكومو كابوتو(Caputo) و بيسك (Pesce) ،(1936-1942) وهم الذين اشرفوا على التنقيب في المواقع الاثرية في لبدة وصبراتة وطرابلس وغيرها وكانوا ينقلون الكثير من الاثار التي يعثرون عليها الى السراي الحمراء لتخزينها ، كما عرض بعضها في المتحف الاثري هناك .
و استخدمت السراي في عهد الادارة البريطانية (1943-1951) لاغراض عسكرية و ادارية ومخازن ، و تواصل استخدامها لادارة مصلحة الاثار التي ترأسها هويلير و جودتشايلد وهاينز وغيرهم ، وبعد ذلك ظلت مقرا لمصلحة الاثار الليبية التي تراسها الايطالي ارنستو كافاريللي (1954-1961) الى جانب مجموعة من الخبراء الايطاليين و بعض الموظفين الليبيين و العرب ، و اثناء ادارة كافاريللي وبعده اصبحت السراي بالكامل تحت سيطرة مصلحة الاثار طبقا لقانون الاثار الصادر عام 1953 ، ومنها تم الاشراف على الحفريات في الجزء الغربي من ليبيا ، واعيد تنظيم متحف السراي ما بين 1954-1958 حيث حولت اجزاء كبيرة من قاعات السراي الى متحف عرف باسم متحف السراي الحمراء ، وقد شمل المتحف الكلاسيكي ، ومتحف ما قبل التاريخ (1952) ، ومتحف الأزياء والعاديات (1953) ومتحف التاريخ الطبيعي(1936) ، ومتحف النقوش الكتابية (1952) ، وفي عهد ثورة الفاتح اضيف متحف الجهاد الوطني (1970) ثم اعيد تطوير المتاحف السابقة،و لاسيما عندما ترأس مصلحة الاثار الشهيد عوض السعداوية ثم د. صلاح الدين السوري ، الا ان تلك المتاحف اغلقت ابوابها في الثمانينات عندما شرع في بناء متحف جديد داخل السراي خلال فترة ترأس د. عبدالله شيبوب مصلحة الاثار ، وقد بني المتحف في شارع استحدثه الإيطاليون داخل السراي في الجانب الشمالي الشرقي منها، وقد أشرفت على بنائه منظمة اليونسكو وتجهيزه من الناحية الفنية و المتحفية ، و قد افتتح رسميا للجمهور في 10/9/1988م باسم المتحف الجماهيري ، و تبلغ المساحة الإجمالية للمتحف حوالي عشرة آلاف متر مربع ، ويتكون المتحف من أربعة طوابق متناسبة مع ارتفاع جدران مبنى السراي ، ومنذ سنوات صارت تسميته مجمع متاحف السراي الحمراء ، و قد عرضت به الى جانب معروضات المتاحف السابقة مجموعة من اللقى والآثار من أغلب المدن والمواقع الأثرية في ليبيا التي تعبر عن التاريخ الحضاري للشعب الليبي ، لتحقيق الهدف الذي أنشىء من أجله هذا المتحف ليكون شاهدا على حضارة الإنسان الليبي عبر العصور حتى العصر الحديث و المعاصر.
هذه حكاية السراي الحمراء التي عكست جزء من التاريخ السياسي لهذه المدينة من خلال الحكام الذين احتموا بالسراي لحكم اهالي طرابلس و ليبيا بصورة عامة ثم اصبحت مشعلا للحضارة الليبية عبر التاريخ بما تحتويه متاحفها من آثار و دار محفوظاتها من وثائق .
